Our school is at the centre of the parish and local community. Opportunities are taken whenever possible for the children to take part in initiatives each year. Recently the school conducted a service on Christmas Eve that included a nativity, readings and carols and a special Ash Wednesday liturgy to signal the start of Lent and preparations for Easter.
“Links and liaison with the community are excellent. The school has a very good partnership with parents, schools and colleges. The community is used exceptionally well to enrich the curriculum and enhance pupils’ personal development. The wider community provides a rich source of visits and visitors.
They take part in local events, for instance at the church, which plays a key role in
school life. These opportunities make a significant contribution to pupils’ personal and spiritual experiences, and improve standards of achievement.
Junior Wardens
A number of our year 5 pupils have recently met with local emergency services to have talks and training on the safety of themselves and others. This also includes raising awareness of their surroundings, encouraging an understanding of their role and responsibility in our community. These pupils are our Junior Wardens.
This term the children have worked with staff of Berneslai Homes, assessing housing for the elderly. They have also recorded litter problems in Hoyland and tidied a small area close to school.
2008 is National Year of Reading so Barnsley Libraries wants children to join up and read for purpose and pleasure in their leisure time and school holidays. In order to encourage more use of the local library by our pupils a librarian and children’s authoress will speak to the children at a special assembly and there will be a one off visit to our school by a mobile library on Tuesday, 19th February.
